How to order vegan at Taco Bell?

Ten items pass as vegan on Taco Bell’s own records; the rest of a vegan order is built with the product page swaps, and this page sets out the steps in the brand’s own terms.

Start from the lines that already pass

Ten items on the menus read pass as published: Avocado Verde Salsa Sauce Packet, Diablo Sauce Packet, Fire Sauce Packet, Hot Sauce Packet, Mild Sauce Packet, Cinnamon Twists, Black Beans and Black Beans and Rice and two more. Each is priced and listed with its record on the vegan menu page.

The steps

  1. Read the tags. Every ingredient statement tags its components certified vegan or certified vegetarian; an item passes on this site only when every component is tagged. The item page prints the tags.
  2. Swap the protein. The product pages offer bean swaps on most lines: on the Crunchwrap Supreme, Beans at 60 calories, no charge and Black Beans at 50 calories, no charge; a swapped build has no record of its own, so the calorie change printed is the option’s figure, not a panel.
  3. Take the dairy off. The brand’s Fresco option removes the dairy and the mayo sauces: “Fresco-Style replaces any mayo based sauces, reduced-fat sour cream, nacho cheese sauce, and shredded cheeses with diced tomatoes. It typically results in a reduction in calories and fat.”
  4. Read the fryer note. “Please note that in some restaurants we may use the same frying oil to prepare menu items that could contain meat.”

What a swapped build is not

A nutrition record. The panel on every item page is the item as published; an option’s calorie figure is the ordering menu’s own number for the option, printed with that label. This site never sums a build into a panel the brand did not publish.

The certification, in the guide’s words

“Items designated as vegetarian on our menu are lacto-ovo, allowing the consumption of dairy and eggs but does not include any animal byproducts.” “Please note that in some restaurants we may use the same frying oil to prepare menu items that could contain meat.”
